At Nick's Yard Service, we want to make the aeration and overseeding process as simple as possible. Below is everything you need to know before, during, and after your service to help ensure the best results for your lawn.

1. Get Your Free Quote

The first step is simple: give us a call or text us to request a quote.

We'll take a look at your lawn, discuss the services you're interested in, and provide a quote for aeration, overseeding, dethatching, or other lawn services.

Once you approve the quote, we'll get you scheduled.

2. Prepare Your Yard Before Service

Before we arrive, please make sure your lawn is free of toys, hoses, decorations, pet waste, and other objects that could interfere with the equipment.

Underground Cables, Wires & Utilities

Our core aerator penetrates approximately 2-3 inches into the soil. Any underground wires, cables, irrigation lines, invisible dog fences, or other items located within this depth must be properly marked before service.

We provide marking flags for known underground items.

If you have anything buried in your yard that is not visible from the surface, please let us know and mark its location before we arrive.

Nick's Yard Service is not responsible for damage to underground items that are not disclosed or clearly marked before service.

Sprinkler Systems

If your property has an irrigation or sprinkler system, please mark all sprinkler heads and any other irrigation components that may not be easily visible.

We recommend using the flags we provide to clearly mark sprinkler heads and other areas of concern.

If you are unsure where your sprinkler lines run, please contact your irrigation company before service to have them identified and marked.

3. We Aerate Your Lawn

Once your lawn is prepared, we'll complete the aeration service using a core aerator.

The machine removes small plugs of soil from the lawn, typically penetrating approximately 2-3 inches deep.

Aeration helps:

  • Reduce soil compaction
  • Improve air and water movement into the soil
  • Allow nutrients to reach the root zone
  • Encourage stronger root development
  • Improve seed-to-soil contact
  • Promote a healthier, thicker lawn

After aeration, you may notice small plugs of soil across your lawn. This is completely normal and beneficial. They naturally break down and return nutrients to the soil.

4. Overseeding: Recommended for Thicker Lawns

If your lawn needs thicker or healthier grass, we recommend combining dethatching, core aeration, and overseeding.

This combination gives new grass seed the best possible opportunity to establish.

Recommended Process

Dethatch -> Aerate -> Overseed -> Water

Dethatching removes excess thatch and debris that can prevent seed from reaching the soil. Aeration creates openings in the soil, and overseeding places new grass seed throughout the lawn.

5. Watering After Overseeding

Your watering routine after overseeding is extremely important.

For the first couple of weeks, the goal is to keep the seed and soil consistently moist without creating standing water or washing the seed away.

We recommend watering twice per day, once in the morning and once in the evening, depending on weather and soil conditions.

Important

  • Do not allow newly seeded areas to completely dry out.
  • Avoid heavy watering that causes puddling or runoff.
  • Adjust watering if we receive significant rainfall.
  • Hot, dry, or windy weather may require additional watering.
  • Once grass begins establishing, reduce watering frequency while increasing the amount of water applied.

Consistent moisture during germination is one of the most important factors in getting good overseeding results.

6. Mowing After Overseeding

Avoid mowing immediately after overseeding.

Allow the new grass enough time to establish before mowing. Once new grass reaches an appropriate mowing height and the lawn is established enough to withstand mowing, you can resume your normal mowing schedule.

When you begin mowing again, make sure your mower blades are sharp and avoid cutting more than approximately one-third of the grass blade at a time.

7. What to Expect After Aeration

Your lawn may look slightly different immediately after service. You may see:

  • Small soil plugs throughout the lawn
  • Small holes throughout the turf
  • Grass seed on the surface
  • Temporary tire or equipment marks in certain conditions

These are normal parts of the process and should improve as the lawn continues to grow.

Results from overseeding are not immediate. Grass seed requires time, moisture, proper temperatures, and consistent care to germinate and establish.

8. Payment

Payment is due within 24 hours of service completion.

We currently accept:

  • Cash
  • Check
  • Card

Please make sure payment is submitted within the 24-hour payment window.

9. Getting the Best Results

For the best possible lawn improvement, we recommend:

Dethatching + Core Aeration + Overseeding + Proper Watering

While aeration alone can provide significant benefits, combining these services gives new seed better access to the soil and improves overall establishment of your lawn.

Proper watering and lawn care after service are just as important as the work we perform.
